When I redesigned my sons bedroom I didn’t want to have to purchase lots of new furniture as there was nothing wrong with his Ikea Malm drawers. I was going from black, red and blue colour scheme to a blue, grey and yellow.

Black furniture made the room dark and as it is such a small room it really dragged it down. I looked into spray painting the furniture, it looked really simple and quick to do.

Valspar have recently launched in the UK and B&Q are selling their range in their stores, they now have a good range of spray paints in lots of different colours. I easily found a grey colour that would work with my new colour scheme. I also needed a primer to prime the drawers first, I used a white to cover the black up as much as possible before I applied the colour.

You need to prepare the area you are using, we thought we covered the area enough but we didn’t! You can see from this picture of when I did the new set of drawers (another post coming!) I laid out paper underneath the sheets of wood but you can see from the top edge I didn’t put enough at the top. I now have a nice spray paint line over my patio slabs!

I have never done spray painting before so I wondered how well it would cover the dark black wood and how easily it would go on. It went on really well, I used a 2 coats white primer and then 2 coats colour paint. You must do light strokes, it is better to do lighter coats of paint and more of them then big thick strokes and less coats.

This picture shows you the top of the drawers with the white primer on and then the finished drawers with the colour on. You can see how well it has gone on and how well it has covered the black.

Once they were in place in my sons room and up against the wallpaper in T’s room, you can see it’s a really good match and I am really pleased with it. I would use this Valspar spray paint again, it was such an easy craft to do and you can transform so many things. They come in a large range of colours so I am sure your find something to match your colour scheme.

Purchase from B&Q, Valspar Primer £8.94 and Valspar Soul Stone £9.24

Keep an eye out for another blog post soon as I am going to show you what I ended up doing with these drawers………

*I was sent the Valspar spray paint to complete this project, however all words are of my own and honest.
